North Florida Paso Fino Horse Association

RECREATIONAL RIDER PROGRAM AND AWARDS

The national Paso Fino Horse Association has several Recreational Rider programs. In 2011, the NFPFHA will hold several events that fit into those programs: for example, the Second Sunday Rides, the Red Hills Horse Trials demonstration, the Mission San Luis demonstration, the Spring Campout, the Fun Show, the Ocala overnight, and many members will participate in the Lost Posse Endurance Ride in December.  Get the Recreational Rider Booklet to find out the details and start tracking activities so that YOU can earn the rewards!

Update December 2011:  The PFHA Recreational Rider Committee announced several updates to the program:

1)  The PFHA Ticket to Ride Program has been changed so a regional activity can now be counted twice.

2) The Committee is trying to develop a Recreational Horse Certification Program, with at least two levels of certification to verify the level of training a horse has completed, especially improtant for prospective buyers.  The committee is seeking your ideas on what tasks are important for a basic and for an advanced pleasure/trail horse to be able to complete.

3) The Committee chair (pending approval at the January Board meeting) is Carol Garcia.  You can contact her or Judi Bradbury, RRC member, at wbrad@wirelessbehive.com

MAY 2011 FUN SHOW ******RESULTS OF NFPFHA'S FIRST ALL-GAITED FUN SHOW*****

NFPFHA pulled off another outstanding event at our very first All-Gaited Fun Show!  We were extremely fortunate to hold the show under the gorgeous and airy covered arena at Windfall Farm in Tallahassee, as the May weather was unusally warm.  Windfall Farm also has lots of trees for parking in the shade, and is in a great location right off a main highway.  The food concession was provided by Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation Ranch (Triple RRR), with all food sales benefiting their rescue horses.  And those ladies can cook!

Most of the competitors rode Paso Finos, but Tennessee Walking Horses and Kentucky Mountain Horses
were also represented. The focus of this show was to have FUN with your horse, so games on horseback were interspersed with typical classes such as Halter, Pleasure, Performance.  We even had "Bareback Sit-A-Buck", and "speed" events! The horses really seemed to enjoy the games as compared to "around on the rail." Riders ranged from 14 years - 71 years old, and everyone rode together, youth, senior, novice, or old pro. We especially wanted a low-stress event so that everyone could go home with smiles --  Bonnie and Summit show their reaction to the day in the picture on the right.

In addition to having fun, our other show objectives included building confidence in the riders and the capability and versatility of the horses, not judging solely on gait.  Competitors had a chance to win ribbons in places 1-6 in the classic classes, and prizes
in the fun classes.  BUT we found that these gaited horses and riders were so good, at times it was hard to eliminate anyone in classes such as the Bareback Sit-A-Buck or the Champagne Ride.  We had to resort to ride-offs in several classes.  The highlight of the day to NFPFHA was that everyone stayed on top of their horse!

What did this show mean to people?  Look at the picture on the left.  The gentleman is holding the ribbon for his wife, possibly the first blue ribbon she has ever won -- and he made certain that ribbon went home with them!  Comments from competitors and spectators include:

It was one of the best I have attended, because it was all about the horses, and having FUN!! The show chair and all her helpers did a superb job, it ran as smooth as silk, and thank goodness for the covered arena and the cool breeze!

I thought it was a great experience for all of us and I am so happy that I ride with a group of people who can both laugh at themselves and cheer others on. I just don't know how we could ask for anything better!

What a great show it was today!!! NICE people, sweet horses, great show coordinator, good help from all the men-folk, good turn out for the audience, and food. It was a super nice time for me and I was so impressed with everyone's horse. Thanks to everyone who supported the show in any capacity.

I so enjoyed being around all the Paso folks, you guys are too much fun and the nicest group, hope to get to ride with you soon.

I was very impressed with the show, it had a very nice mix of relaxed feeling about it and yet there was competition and eagerness to do well.

Good variety of classes and good mix of "serious" and "fun" classes. The venue was perfect.  The food vendor was awesome.

Fees - I thought it was a bargain!  I felt the fees were more than fair, especially given the fact that the fun classes offered a “prize”. Shows are not cheap to put on, and your idea of any and all classes for $35.00 can’t be beat.

I thought the classes were great, especially the “fun” classes. I felt the timing of the classes was good as well. The covered arena was a wonderful and plenty of shade for the breaks. The food by the Rescue organization was really good and a wonderful cause too.

The fun show is definitively a go next year...and every year...this is just the start!!  As always, this was a TEAM EFFORT, and thank you to all who helped!  Many more Fun Show pictures are on our Photos page. Complete show results are available below.

In April 2011 the North Florida PFHA hosted its annual Spring Campout at the 7BarL Ranch, a rustic horse retreat and campground, on the Upper Suwannee River near the small town of Live Oak, Florida. Megan Altavilla organized the event and Dan & Suzi Kilbride hosted three rides along the spanish moss-covered oak tree forest, which borders the famous Suwannee. Lindsay Campbell and Ed Casillas, who are very familiar with the large number of trails, led the way and not a single rider (or horse) was lost among the several thousand public acres of beautiful forest in the "real" Florida.

What makes this area unique is that the river, as it comes into Florida from the Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia, narrows and cuts through limestone forming a ravine, with the trail meandering 30-50 feet above the river for many miles. Along its banks are caves and ledges, and adding to the wonder of the place are natural springs that bubble up to the surface and spill down the sides of the cliffs, making small, but lively, waterfalls. In addition, sandy areas also form along the banks, allowing access to the river with our horses, where we waved at kayakers drifting down the lazy river.

Not to be ignored was the fellowship among the 20 or so participants at mealtime. Along with the shared lunches on Saturday and Sunday, Sally Bek provided the delicious ham for the potluck dinner on Saturday night, held under the pavilion. The cool breeze, along with dessert, fostered story-telling which lasted long into the night. All the participants were healthy and happy as we packed up on Sunday afternoon and reluctantly headed for home.  Everyone is looking forward to next year to do it all again, when we hope you will join us!  More pictures are available on our Photos page.

April 2011 Clinic. Robin Ratliff has been a professional Paso Fino trainer since 1973. Her numerous recognitions include PFHA Trainer of the Year as well as USEF Equestrian of Honor. Robin presented an all-day clinic for enthusiasts who wanted to expand their knowledge of Paso Finos, and horses, in general, at Greener Pastures Ranch. She began with introductory, general information and moved to detailed instructions on bitting, choice of saddles, and specific advanced techniques for successful enjoyment of your equine companion. Central to the presentation was Robin's statement that, "...if you have a well-trained horse, you have a well-trained horse." Her advice is that tack needs will be determined by the flavor of the activity, whether a trail ride, an exhibition, a parade, or an arena competition show. They can be adjusted to the rider, the horse, and the venue, or surroundings.

Robin was open to questions throughout the clinic. Her talent, experience, and people skills assisted her in communicating well with the eclectic group of participants, who ranged from 11 to 80 years old. Everyone was welcomed and included in all of the various activities regardless of whether they were a neophyte or experienced riding pro. Owners gave riding demonstrations for the group and Robin offered specific corrections and positive responses, always encouraging the riders' efforts. A client of Robin's with horses in training at Greener Pastures generously offered one of her National Champion show horses for "test drives"; participants were invited to take a turn on Capricho de Arroyo Maraca and experience the wonder and smooth gait of a quality Paso Fino. The riders included the youngest to the oldest participants, much to the enjoyment of the group. Everyone dismounted with a smile of their face!

Several expressed an interest in becoming involved in Paso Finos and our North Florida Region in particular for our varied horse-related activities. We look forward to their future participation.

Oh yes, we can't forget food! The volunteers from Triple RRR Equine Rescue prepared and presented us with a choice lunch which included hot and cold sandwiches, chips, an assortment of veggies and condiments, candy, Italian Ices, cold drinks and cookies. The volunteers included members of the FSU Equestrian Team. They all offered their help with preparing and serving, but also enjoyed and learned about Paso Finos by their presence at the clinic.

There was never a dull moment. If you missed this informative and enjoyable clinic, watch for future opportunities offered by Robin Ratliff, and do yourself a favor...BE THERE!
